Random Sapsucker

This yellow-bellied sapsucker was feeding off the wells of sap near our beehives yesterday.  The woodpecker was making the rounds to various tree trunks and I noticed that some yellow-rumped warblers would come down for the sap too.  Remember, people in the northern US, if you see sapsuckers, hummingbirds are possible.  They follow the sapsuckers up during migration, so if you have a sapsucker, put out your hummingbird feeder.

  • Didn’t know that hummingbirds followed sapsuckers during migration. Makes sense. I suspect that this is more apparent in the east, where Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers are more migratory. Here in western Oregon Red-breasted Sapsuckers are resident, thus there is not a detectable movement to key on. Rufous Hummingbirds usually return in early March (late Feb. on the south coast). With a milder climate and earlier blossoming of flowers and trees, their timing is more tied to the blooming of Red Flowering Current and ornamental fruit trees.

  • I didnt know that about hummingbirds following sapsuckers around. What a a gorgeous woodpecker!
