Not your typical birder!

Murmuration + Peregrine Falcon + 10th Doctor = AWESOME!

This is from a documentary called Earthflight from BBC One and it’s narrated by David Tennant (aka the 10th Doctor on Doctor Who).  This clip is really cool and explains why raptors don’t have an easy time grabbing a starling in a large flock (aka murmuration).

It looks pretty awesome and not nearly as cheesy as that Mississippi River of Death I got from Nat Geo.

  1. That was so amazing to watch, it hardly seemed real!

Just this morning my five-year-old son was asking me which dinosaur was fastest, and I told him that we don’t know exactly how fast the extinct species of dinosaurs were, but the fastest living species of dinosaur (i.e. bird) is the peregrine falcon, and then I started explaining how raptors hunt. At that point we were sadly interrupted.

I figure that describing birds as dinosaurs is a good way to get a child to appreciate birds, though his teachers haven’t all agreed.

Wow! I had to really listen to the video to make out that it was David narrating. I’m not used to hearing his heavy Scottish brogue.

@Denise: Watch “Tooth and Claw,” the second episode in Series 2, to hear his native accent.
