Do You See That Pauraque?

Posted by Birdchick on November - 21 - 2010

I’m going to start this post off with landscape shots that have a brown bird called a common pauraque in them.  See if you can find the bird(s) and at the end of the post, I’ll put up the photos pointing out where they are and you can see if you were able to find  [ Read More ]

South Texas Redheads

Posted by Birdchick on November - 19 - 2010

These are some redheads bathing and splashing against the sunset at Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center in Port Aransas, TX.  I took this particular photo through my spotting scope.  The redheads were not at the best sun angle, but with the splashing, I thought it was an arty shot. It was a huge flock of birds.   [ Read More ]

Love Affair With A Green-winged Teal

Posted by Birdchick on November - 12 - 2010

My non birding New Orleans fun is finished and I’m back in Texas to enjoy some time with friends at the Rio Grande Valley Bird Festival. I had a brief love affair with a green-winged teal.  I don’t normally get the above view of a teal.  Generally, they are fleeing from our plane when we  [ Read More ]

The Heart Breaking Aplomado Falcon

Posted by Birdchick on November - 12 - 2008

One of the fun parts of visiting the Rio Grande Valley is the chance to see an aplomado falcon. One of the best places to look is Laguna Atascosa NWR. Two years ago I got the chance to chase one down (it practically took half the bird festival to help me get it). The aplomado  [ Read More ]

South Padre Island Birding

Posted by Birdchick on November - 11 - 2008

Amy, Clay, and I had great looks at other birds besides the osprey starting a nest. We started the morning at the jetty where many fishermen gather, as do birders. We saw so many dolphins, it could have qualified as a starling flock. But we were not after marine mammals, we wanted to scan the  [ Read More ]
