I was trying to get a video of this poor downy woodpecker trying to eat peacefully from the suet feeder, but ended up getting some interesting nuthatch footage instead. Watch the white-breasted nuthatch in the upper right corner. It goes through a series of displays to drive off the rose-breasted grosbeak. I was impressed:

That was neat – those on my feeders tend to be scared off by all sorts even sparrows so never stay on the feeder long
Heh! Love how the grosbeak tries to act nonchalant, but just can’t take it in the end.
I like how the grosbeak seems entirely unimpressed with the nuthatch’s antics, and then flies off with a “Yeah, whatever buddy”
We’ve had Nuthatches act like this before though I’ve never been able to capture it with my camera. They squat down, spread their wings, and waddle back and forth in an effort to put up a big front. Too funny! Yours kind of reminds me of a bat! lol!
the nuthatches (red and white) in Toronto are very much the same! they are quite aggressive towards other birds, and even each other. however, the red breasted are very people friendly. not so much for the white
WOW, very interesting behavior. Nice video!
That’s wacky!
How great to catch that on camera! Thanks for posting it.
