I found this nuthatch meticulously searching beneath each shingle for insects to eat. Woodpeckers aren’t the only birds looking for insects off the sides of houses.

Kind of an embarrassing pose.
His feathers blend quite nicely with the roof!
We had a nuthatch eating bugs out from under our car’s windshield wipers and the vent beneath them.
Cool picture
our house is covered with T111, which the woodpeckers made plenty of holes in one fall when the cluster flies were particularly thick. the chickadees now think those holes are a grand place to hide sunflower seeds, so we’ve got birds slowly dismantling our home. and i’m sick enough to be mostly okay with that.
Now that’s clever. What a cutie. I’ve not witnessed that before either, but I’ve been jolted out of bed by a hungry woodpecker rat-a-tat-tatting on the siding. Ha!
I noticed the same thing this past weekend – maybe it’s regional – I live about six blocks from you.
Send him to PA! Could really use some help with the recent influx of stinkbugs! I’ve only ever seen a Carolina Wren eat the little stinkers. They’re just everywhere.
Interesting! I wonder if other birds figure this out (e.g. chickadees, blue jays) and try to steal the cache!?
